Using the W.A.N.T.S. Checklist Clears Pilots For Takeoff
Using proper checklists in a timely and consistent fashion enhances flight safety!
Checklists, checklists, checklists… They are the basis for improved safety on every flight.
Using a comprehensive preflight checklist, such as the 3-P Process, sets an excellent foundation for your flights. Perceive, Process and Perform based upon potential hazards. Once the process is complete and you make a “GO” decision, let’s FLY!
I recent had a conversation with professional pilot, Chuck Byrd about our favorite pilot techniques. Chuck mentioned the W.A.N.T.S. checklist as one of his favorite techniques.
Keep in mind, the NWKRAFT checklist is typically performed during preflight phase. NWKRAFT covers – NOTAMS, Weather, Known ATC Delays, Runway Environment Conditions, Alternates, Fuel Requirements and Takeoff and Landing Data.
The W.A.N.T.S checklist is performed moments before you start the aircraft, generally speaking.
W.A.N.T.S. Means:
- W – Get updated weather information for your departure airport, enroute phase, arrival airport and alternate airport (if applicable).
- A – Activate your flight plan. Review expected routing, as well as briefing the departure procedure and arrival procedure (if applicable).
- N – Obtain NOTAMS for your departure, arrival and alternate airports.
- T – Verify takeoff and landing distances and runway conditions.
- S – Self Check. IMSAFE checklist, and other needs such as restroom, hydration and nutrition needs.
